Dumpster will be on site Fri-Sun, but main cleanup will be on Saturday. (We may will up the dumpster on Saturday, so caution if you wait until Sunday.

On Saturday:
- Cleanup is 9am-3pm
- Garden meeting at 11am
- Garden pot-luck at noon. Bring a dish to share!

Unfortunately, a row may or may not be ready to occupy by April 1. The Trustees are a little behind schedule. But we cannot move cleanup - permits are paid for and the dumpster reservation is made. In addition, everyone has 'cleared their schedule' for this particular weekend, so it would be challenging to ask everyone to move their schedules.

At cleanup we will clean out as much of the garden as we can and assist everyone who needs help in B and C rows. We could also use a hand with some structural repairs on the B and C rows. On Saturday we will know the state of A row and go from there. The trustees will also be there to answer questions (They should move closer to completing by April 1 even if they are not done yet)

The Trustees, our landlords, will also be prohibiting the creative recycling we have been using to build structures for people to use growing vertically. They are designing a new pergola system, and we will know more about this system and potential funding for it on the 1st. But this does mean a lot of materials people have been saving cannot be reused. April 1 will also be an opportunity to dispose of any extra such materials.

See everyone April 1st!

More tree removal
<dc:subject>News</dc:subject>

Unfortunately the garden must remove another mature tree.

The large Honey Locust tree on A row, near the shed and our small seating area, will be removed November 21.

While the tree looks fine, it has reached the end of life. Here's a little more information on the trees.

Why were the trees were removed?

The center area tree was nearing the end of its life. If you looked at it from far away it had grown very thin in its branches (in contrast, the tree near the Tremont gate, is very full). The final blow was getting hit by lighting last year, with caused additional damage. With all those issues, we didn't to risk the tree dying or falling over and causing damage, so we had it removed.

The other tree removed, near garden B133, was a white mulberry tree. While healthy, its growth was out of control. It heavily shaded around 20 gardens; and it seemed like the more we pruned it, the faster it grew. Financially, we could not keep up with pruning, so we had this tree also removed.

The new trees we planted are shown below.

Both trees are native to the area and will provide for the local wildlife as well as the garden's beauty.

In the center area we have a Hop Hornbeam or Ironwood tree. A larger tree, it produces nice leaves all summer long, with a hops-like seed that will provide food for our birds. Its also a tree that will grow well in drought or poor soil (once established) so it should last a long time in the garden. color:#191919;">

It seems to happen every few years.

On the night of Sunday, April 12th, a car crashed into our garden. The car, driving erratically down East Berkeley Street, swerved to the left and headed toward the garden. After launching off the curb, the car sailed through the fence, taking out 2 fence panels and their concrete foundations. While sailing through the fence, the car also managed to spin around 180 degrees and land in the garden central grass area facing the 'wrong way'.

The car hit around the middle of the garden, so only the corner of 1 garden plot was damaged. In landing in the central area the car managed to take out our the water system. Luckily, the water was not yet on, so we did not have a geyser in addition to the car in the garden. But because of the damage, water for gardeners can't be restored until the system gets repaired.

No one was injured in the crash, but one gardener was heading towards that area, and missed being in the wrong place by about a minute. The driver was not injured, and there were no pedestrians on that sidewalk at the time (fortunately, given it was an early evening crash).

While there were no injuries, the garden damage was extensive. The water system was damaged below ground, so the concrete pad has to be removed and the entire area excavated in order to repair the damage and replace all the hardware. The fence panels will take a few months to re-fabricate.

For those who have asked how they can help, the garden is accepting donations that will go towards repairing the water system and towards the Berkeley fence fund. (We are unsure if the car owner's insurance will cover the damage.)

If you wish to donate to the garden, please make cheques out to BNAN/TToR, and write "Berkeley Garden" in the memo field. Please indicate if you would like a receipt for your donation for tax purposes.

Cheques can be sent to

	Berkeley Community Garden
c/o Jim Smith. The gates were found locked in the morning, so we're assuming someone hopped over the Alley fence to do the damage. Every tap except the two near tremont were removed - we assume visibility kept them from those taps. There wasn't much metal in the plumbing (minimal copper and brass), but scrap value is the only motive we can think of. A total of 21 stations/42 taps were removed. This looks like more than just vandalism. Nothing else in the garden appears damaged. A reminder to all gardeners to remember to lock the garden gates when you leave at or close to sunset.

The police have taken a report and will begin an investigation. If you saw anything or anyone suspicious in the garden over the weekend, please contact the police. We're hoping BNAN insurance will cover the repairs.

We'll keep the community updated on the status of things as we know.

Press: Photos can be used in reports.
